PSB Code of Conduct

The PSB are educational and residential communities that are composed of students, staff, parents, families, and community partners. As with any community, standards of behaviour must be upheld and maintained for the safe and effective operation of that community. Those behaviours as outlined in the code of conduct, are a guide for all members of the community in an effort to observe respect, civility and responsible citizenship. In addition, where applicable, staff members must also observe the ethical conduct and standards of their specific licensing organization.

The code of conduct is also intended as a tool that will enable each student the opportunity to live/ learn in a positive and safe environment that will support every aspect of his / her growth (emotional, social, intellectual, moral, physical and cultural).

Standards of Behaviour in Support of Respect, Civility and Responsible Citizenship Students, Parents, families and Community Partners:

  • Shall treat others with honesty, integrity and fairness
  • Shall respect the school and school property (shall not engage in acts of vandalism).
  • Shall observe respectful, appropriate interaction while at school, in residence or in the community.
  • Shall seek adult support to intervene in bullying, intimidating, threatening or assaultive behaviour and to help others in need.
  • Shall respect the rights of others to learn and to befriend others without interference.
  • Shall seek external supports if necessary for peaceful resolution of conflicts.
  • Shall observe appropriate attire: mid-section, underclothing fully covered, no violent, sexist discriminatory or racist messages or messages about alcohol or drugs.
  • Shall respect the property of others and the school (no stealing or damaging the property of others)
  • Shall be diligent, punctual and arrive prepared for classes and appointments
  • Shall not directly or indirectly (e.g., via gestures, facial expressions, graffiti, internet communications or postings,, etc) insult, deride, bully, threaten or otherwise discriminate against others as individuals or as members or a group based on differences in race, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender roles, sexual orientation, physical or intellectual abilities.
  • Shall not use obscene or vulgar language or gestures with other members of the school community or with members of the community at large in the context of school sponsored events.
  • Shall not engage in gossip, activities or internet /computer use, that is designed to initiate, perpetuate or encourage others to initiate/perpetuate exclusion, derision, insults, intimidation, bullying or verbal/physical/sexual harassment or assault.
  • Shall not wear head coverings unless for religious affiliation or a medical condition

Safety

  • Shall not engage in bullying behaviour (participation or witnessing)
  • Shall not engage in sexual harassment or assault
  • Shall not be in possession of weapons (any knowledge of such must be reported to the appropriate authorities).
  • Shall not be in possession of or under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs – (no possession, consumption, distribution or selling).
  • Shall not smoke cigarettes on school / residential property.

PSB will make every effort reasonable effort to provide strategies and interventions that will be preventive in nature and will ensure a consistent, coordinated approach to managing student behaviour.

Breaches to the code of conduct may include, but are not limited to the following gradual and progressive consequences for students. One or more consequence may be given, depending on the frequency, nature and severity of the infraction.

  • A warning
  • A note in the student’s record or a call home by staff
  • A meeting involving the student/ staff/ parent or guardian (managers or principal may be involved)
  • An intervention by someone in a position of authority
  • A detention
  • Withdrawal of privileges or an activity
  • Temporary suspension from the classroom (in house suspension)
  • Having to make up missed instructional time.
  • Peer mediation
  • A composition or letter
  • A remedial action ( damage repair, restitution, duties, replacement, reimbursement)
  • Behavioural program plan
  • Expectation contract (student or parent/guardian)
  • Referral to health care professionals (on site or in the community)
  • Suspension (Article s.306 (1) of the Education Amendment Act, 2007
  • Dismissals (short or long term)
