Admissions Overview

Applications for students to attend a provincial demonstration school program are made by school boards in accordance with the Ministry's Provincial Demonstration Policy Program Memorandum 89. It is expected that students will have received the maximum level of special education that the board can provide, however, in spite of such intervention and support, the student is not experiencing success.

Students seeking admission to our programs must be diagnosed by a psychologist or psychological associate as having a severe learning disability, with or without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

All students who apply and meet the criteria for admission will be considered for our programs. In the best interest of the student, admission may be deferred for a period of time. Provincial demonstration schools are not designed for students who may need residential or day treatment for mental health or students with learning disabilities who have severe emotional and behavioural issues.

Consultation and Application Process for Provincial Demonstration Schools

Students who are eligible under the Regulations of PPM 89 can be referred to the Resource Services staff at Trillium Demonstration School.

The Provincial Committee on Learning Disabilities (PCLD) governs the admissions process for Provincial Demonstration Schools.  Please refer to the following information sheet for further information about the application process and a typical profile of students who are eligible to attend our schools.

Application Process:

  1. Consultation

    During the consultation phase a Resource Services Teacher from the school will conference (phone or in-person) with the school team and parents/guardians to discuss the student’s profile and academic history.  The purpose of the consultation is to assist with educational programming. To facilitate this process a Consultation Package and Consent Forms are submitted to the Resource Services staff.

    Consultation packages can be forwarded at any time during the school year.
  1. Phase 1 Application

    Consultation is mandatory before proceeding to the Phase 1 application. The Phase 1 application package provides the Resource Services staff with information from the OSR as well as supporting documentation from support services staff (e.g., psycho-educational assessment, speech-language pathology assessment, etc.).  Once received, the package is reviewed and the Resource Services staff will schedule and administer an educational assessment for the student.  A confidential educational assessment report for the student is provided, which will include recommendations for programming.
  1. Binder Application

    The binder application phase is the formal application which will be presented to the Provincial Committee on Learning Disabilities (PCLD).  The binder application contains an in-depth student profile, family history, medical information and educational data.  Based on this information and a family interview, the PCLD will make recommendations for admission. Interviews are conducted in late fall and early spring.
